Bursitis

Bursitis

A Bursa is a fluid filled sack or sack like cavity found in some joints that counters friction during movement. Bursitis is the inflammation and swelling of a bursa.

The most common bursitis that presents to our office is shoulder bursitis (subacromial bursitis) and hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis AKA greater trochanteric pain syndrome).

Bursitic pain can occur for many reasons. Often due to incorrect or tired movement patterns.

The remedy for bursitis is often multimodal and may include any of the following.

  • Treatment aimed at promoting full, easy, pain free range of movement of the joint

  • Rehabilitation of weak muscles

  • Education of self-management, warning signs and activity modification

  • Retraining of involved movements
