The Hidden Restriction: What Are Adhesions?

Adhesions (often called "scar tissue" or "fibrosis") are dense, sticky bands of collagen that form between muscles, tendons, and nerves. Think of them like "biological glue" that prevents your tissues from sliding past each other.

When your tissues can’t glide or move easily, your body is forced to compensate. This leads to chronic tightness, reduced range of motion, and persistent pain that often resists traditional stretching or rest.

Why Adhesions Form

Adhesions are a natural consequence of various types of injury and stress. They typically develop due to:

  • Repetitive Strain: Micro-trauma from sports, poor ergonomics, or heavy manual labor.

  • Post-Surgical Healing: Normal scar tissue that "over-grows" and binds to neighboring healthy tissue.

  • Persistent Inflammation: Chronic irritation that causes the tissue to thicken and lose its natural elasticity.

  • Sustained Posture: Spending long periods in fixed positions can create mechanical overload, causing tissues to become sensitized and fibrotic.

The "Stuck" Nerve & Muscle Paradox

The biggest challenge with adhesions is that they are invisible on X-rays or MRIs. We identify them during examination by palpating specific “knots” in the tissue that reproduce your symptoms. If you’ve been told your scans are "clear" but you still feel a constant "tugging" or "heaviness," it is likely due to:

  • Muscle Inhibition: An adhered muscle cannot contract or relax fully, making it feel perpetually weak or "perma-tight."

  • Neural Entrapment: Adhesions can "snag" a nerve, causing electric, zapping, or numbing sensations. In these cases, the nerve is subjected to abnormal mechanical tension during movement, which drives your symptoms.

Our Investigative Treatment Protocol

At Southside Spine & Sport, we specialize in identifying and releasing these specific points of mechanical restriction.

Manual Adhesion Release

  • Mechanism: We use targeted, manual therapy to apply precise compression and tension and disrupt the fibrous cross-links between tissues.

  • Result: Restores the "glide" between muscles and nerves, providing immediate improvements in range of motion and a reduction in nagging tightness.

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

  • Mechanism: Acoustic pressure waves penetrate deep into the tissue to break down dense fibrotic adhesions in areas too deep for manual therapy alone.

  • Result: Decreased pain and increased range of motion. Shockwave therapy also stimulates a pro-inflammatory healing response, restarting the healing process in tissues where manual therapy alone does not.

Movement After Release

Breaking the adhesion down is only half the battle. Once the tissue is "free," we utilize graded loading and mobility work, like the Jefferson Curl or specific nerve gliding exercises, to ensure the adhesions don't reform and that your movement stays mobile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adhesion release hurt? The treatment involves a combination of deep pressure and tension to resolve the restriction. While it can be uncomfortable, the sensation is short-lived, and we always work within your specific tolerance.

How is this different from a standard massage? Standard massage focuses on relaxation and increasing general blood flow. Adhesion release is site-specific. We are hunting for the exact mechanical snag in the tissue and applying precise treatment to resolve it.

How many sessions are needed? Most patients experience a significant change in tissue texture, decreased pain, and increased mobility within 3 to 5 sessions.
